EV startup Fisker revealed plans for a four-door convertible supercar with a Tesla-crushing 600 miles of range

Fisker revealed the Rōnin along with two other brand-new vehicles on Thursday.
  • Electric-car startup Fisker unveiled three brand-new models on Thursday.
  • One is the Rōnin, a four-door supercar with five seats and a claimed 1,000-plus horsepower.
  • Fisker wants the $385,000 car to have at least 600 miles of range, more than any other EV out there.

One of the biggest things keeping people from buying electric vehicles is limited driving range. Well what if you could drive, say, 600 miles before filling up?

US electric-car startup Fisker claims buyers of its upcoming Rōnin supercar will be able to do just that. If they have around $385,000 to spare, of course.

Judging by the few details Fisker provided at an event revealing the Rōnin and a some other new models on Thursday, the ultra-high-end vehicle will be like no EV on the road today. It may eventually have some competition in the Tesla Roadster, the supercar that Elon Musk has been teasing for years.

Fisker's goal of at least 600 miles of range is significantly more than any EV available today. The Lucid Air Grand Touring, a $154,000 luxury sedan from another American startup, is the current range leader with 516 miles of driving potential, according to the EPA. The next best is Tesla's Model S with around 400 miles of estimated range. Most mainstream EVs fall somewhere between 200 and 300 miles.

According to Tesla's website, the Roadster will have a range of 620 miles. But it's unclear when it will go on sale after multiple delays. Mercedes has experimented with super-long-range EVs in the past, building a concept called the Vision EQXX that recently traveled 746 miles on a single charge

Fisker on Thursday also revealed a small, cheap SUV, a pickup truck called the Alaska, and an off-road version of its debut Ocean SUV. The splashy event came as Fisker struggles to ramp up production of the Ocean, which started deliveries in the US this year. On Friday cut its target for the number of Oceans it plans to produce in 2023.

The sleek, low-slung convertible will have seating for five and four doors, the company said. The rear doors will swing open backward. The Rōnin's battery cells will be integrated into its body structure, helping to achieve the 600-mile range target. Fisker's technological flagship, the Rōnin will have three motors, 1,000-plus horsepower, and a 0-60-mph time of around 2 seconds, Fisker said.
