Chicago police say officers shot and critically wounded a man after he opened fire on officers while fleeing on foot from a narcotics investigation. Interim Chicago police Superintendent Fred Waller says officers were conducting that investigation Saturday evening in the city’s South Shore neighborhood when the man under investigation ran from them. After a short foot chase, Waller says the man turned and fired at the pursuing officers, who returned fire and shot him. He says the man suffered critical injuries, but his condition stabilized after surgery. Waller says officers recovered the man’s firearm, the rounds he fired and narcotics at the shooting scene.
