30 killed, over 70 injured as train derails in Pakistan
At least 30 people were killed, and over 80 were injured on Sunday when ten coaches of the Hazara Express train derailed near the Sarhari Railway station in Nawabshah district.
Some of the train coaches were overturned, and passengers became trapped inside the coaches.
When authorities learned of the accident, ambulances and police were on the scene, and train movements on the track were immediately halted.
Syed Murad Ali Shah, the chief minister of Sindh, has announced that 30 persons have already died and 70 others have been injured in the incident.
According to Sharjeel Inam Memon, the Sindh Minister for Information, Transport, and Mass Transit, an emergency was declared at the community hospital in the Benazirabad area as soon as information about the incident was received.
Train accidents are not unusual in Pakistan, where most of the country’s railway rails are remnants of the British colonial era. Since gaining independence in 1947, successive governments have not significantly improved the state of the department or the railway tracks, despite several accidents that have killed hundreds of lives.
A terrible collision on June 7, 2021, close to Daharki in Sindh’s Ghotki area, resulted in at least 65 deaths and 150 injuries.
Another train, the Allama Iqbal Express, derailed on Saturday in Sindh near Padidan station. There were no deaths in the incident because all the passengers could escape.
