How a 21-Year-Old Simran Shaikh Batted Her Way From Dharavi to WPL 2023
DHARAVI, one of Asia’s largest slums and a sprawling hub of narrow lanes, is often synonymous with poverty, overpopulation, and adversity. But for Simran Shaikh, a 21-year-old girl, Dharavi was her playground, her home, and the stage for her dreams.
Early Days: Born into a family of six, residing in a cramped shanty, Simran was introduced to cricket by her elder brother. The open drains, crowded lanes, and makeshift pitches of Dharavi became her training ground. With a tennis ball and a wooden plank as her initial equipment, Simran’s raw talent was evident from the start.
Challenges: Being a girl from a conservative background, playing cricket was not deemed “appropriate”. She faced scorn from neighbors, and even her family wasn’t entirely supportive initially. Moreover, access to proper coaching, equipment, and nutrition was a constant challenge.
Turning Point: At 16, during a local match, Simran’s aggressive batting caught the eye of a local coach, Raghav Menon, who saw in her the spark of a professional cricketer. He provided her with proper training, better equipment, and introduced her to a formal cricketing structure, getting her a place in a city club.
Rise to Fame: Simran’s prowess on the field couldn’t be ignored for long. She quickly made her mark in Mumbai’s cricketing circles. Her aggressive style, sharp reflexes, and impeccable technique made her a standout player.
By 20, she was part of Mumbai’s Women’s Cricket Team, leading the charts as the highest run-scorer for the season.
WPL 2023: The Women’s Premier League (WPL), one of the most prestigious T20 leagues globally, was Simran’s dream. And in 2023, this dream turned into reality. She was picked by one of the leading franchises, not just as a player but a significant player. Her journey from the by-lanes of Dharavi to the floodlights of WPL was complete.
Legacy Beyond Cricket: Apart from her on-field achievements, Simran has been an ambassador for change. She started an initiative called “Batting for Dreams” in Dharavi, aiming to provide cricket coaching and life skills to underprivileged girls.
Simran’s story isn’t just about her meteoric rise in cricket; it’s a testament to the indomitable human spirit. It highlights that with passion, determination, and the right support, even the sky isn’t the limit
