‘Why…?’ - Man Utd star hits out at FA after major rule changes ahead of new season
Manchester United centre-back Raphael Varane has taken to social media to question the decision of the FA to implement new changes to rules ahead of the new season.
There will be longer minutes played as a result of the frequent delays to the game whenever the ball is not in play, while players and managers will be booked for any slight show of dissent.
Arsenal and Manchester City were at the receiving end as the new rules were adhered to by the officials during the FA Community Shield at Wembley yesterday.
Mikel Arteta, Thomas Partey and Julian Alvarez were all booked yesterday for something they would have easily gotten away with last term.
Varane is concerned ahead of the new Premier League season, and he took to Twitter/X this morning to express how he feels.
“We had a meeting last week with the FA,” the Man United star posted.
“They recommended from the referees new decisions and rules.
“From the managers and players, we have shared our concerns for many years now that there are too many games, the schedule is overcrowded, and it’s at a dangerous level for players physical and mental well-being.
“Despite our previous feedbacks, they have now recommended for next season: longer games, more intensity, and less emotions to be shown by players. We just want to be in good condition on the pitch to give 100% to our club and fans. Why are our opinions not being heard?
“As a player, I feel very privileged to do the job I love every day but I feel these changes are damaging our game. We want to be at our maximum level, the best we can be and put on amazing performances for fans to celebrate every week.
“I believe it is important that we, players and managers, highlight these important issues as we want to protect the game we love and give the fans our best.”
Players will be walking on eggshells going forward due to some of the rules, and we are set to see plenty of red cards next season.
Partey and Alvarez barely touched the ball yesterday, but they still picked up yellow cards nonetheless for slightly kicking it away.
The longer minutes will see games go longer than 100 minutes, and those who played at a World Cup in Qatar would already be familiar with it.
The only problem is that it would be happening over the course of a full season this time around, and more players are bound to suffer from fatigue.
The FA are trying to curb time-wasting, and Varane, his teammates and other players will quickly need to learn how to get the game back in play as soon as possible anytime the ball goes out.
Man United kick off the new Premier League against Wolverhampton Wanderers next Monday and will be looking to start things on a winning note.
Manager Erik ten Hag and his players will need to quickly get themselves up to speed with the new rules and the implications if they are to make the best out of the new season.
