The Chicago Bears Need To Give This Free Agent A Call
Injuries are a fact of life in the NFL. Training camp is no exception to this. It’s summer, it’s hot, and guys have started banging pads for the first time in months. That could often lead to some physical setbacks. Unfortunately, the Chicago Bears have been suffering more than they’d wished. Half the starters on defense have missed practice with various ailments. Perhaps no unit has felt the sting of setbacks more than the offensive line. Nate Davis hasn’t practiced for the past week. Teven Jenkins only just returned from his own injury. Now Lucas Patrick is dealing with something.
The interior offensive depth is already getting tested. GM Ryan Poles might be wise to consider adding some veteran depth in case this problem continues. This time of year, the pickings are slim, but some notable names are still available. Dalton Risner and Andrew Norwell would be ideal but unlikely. Both will be seeking starting opportunities after solid seasons in 2022. The one Poles should consider calling is Justin Pugh. While the 32-year-old isn’t in his prime anymore, he’s still a solid pass protector. The only question is whether he is healed from his torn ACL suffered in October of last season.
When healthy, he is at least a serviceable presence and understands how to block for a mobile quarterback. Last but not least, he’s known for being a great teammate and leader.
The Chicago Bears could use another veteran presence.
They’ve already added Marcedes Lewis at tight end to give the offense some extra wisdom. Pugh would bring ten seasons of experience to the table. He’s also versatile, having played both left guard and right tackle in his career. That would give the Bears some flexibility. Last season was unfortunate for him, but he was very good in 2021. Pugh allowed only 20 pressures and zero sacks in 524 pass-blocking snaps. The Bears may want to give their younger guys opportunities, but the questionable health record of Jenkins and Patrick should encourage them to add some insurance.
Barring that, it wouldn’t be a shock if the Chicago Bears look to waivers in the coming weeks for some help. They have the #1 priority through week three of the regular season. It’s hard to imagine Poles not taking advantage of that in some capacity. Adding some extra offensive line depth would be right up his alley. Pugh won’t cost much to acquire. If that knee is healthy, he can help this team.
