ELMS LMP2 Numbers Set To Boom In 2024

The 2024 European Le Mans Series season is expected to feature a record number of LMP2 entries, DSC has learned.

DSC’s sources in the paddock report a strong mix of returning, expanding and brand-new class entrants for next year, with the total number of entry requests expected to exceed 20 cars as teams look for their best opportunities to join the grid for the 2024 Le Mans 24 Hours.

This will build on the 2023 ELMS entry, which features 18 full-season LMP2 cars split between LMP2 (7 cars) and LMP2 Pro-Am for line-ups with a (mandatory) Bronze-ranked driver (11 cars).

Growth for the ELMS is expected in part because LMP2 cars will not be eligible for the FIA WEC outside of Le Mans from 2024, as the globe-trotting championship moves to a two-class structure for Hypercar and LMGT3 entries.

However, the Automobile Club de l’Ouest has confirmed that for the 24 Hours there will be at least 15 LMP2 spaces reserved for teams competing in the European Le Mans Series, Asian Le Mans Series and IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship.

Meanwhile, the increase in demand for LMP2 and an expected boost in entry requests for the incoming LMGT3 class, is causing nervousness within the ELMS’ LMP3 ranks.

Sources suggest that assurances have been offered for ELMS LMP3 entries in 2024, though likely at a lower level than in 2023 where 12 cars feature on the full-season entry.
