Breaking Down The Top 3 Observations From Chicago Bears Training Camp
We stand just five days away from the Bears’ first preseason game. Therefore, I’d like to share my three most notable observations from Bears training camp up to this point.
Chase Claypool Has Exceeded Many People’s Expectations
There’s a lot of excitement surrounding the connection between Justin Fields and DJ Moore, yet Chase Claypool has been making a significant impact. His impressive physical abilities combined with his talent create a lot of potential for this quarterback/wide receiver duo. Claypool has been able to stay on the field and his strong competitive spirit is evident. If the Bears’ wide receiver lineup features Moore, followed by Claypool and then Mooney, it will speak volumes about the depth of that group. My confidence in Claypool was already strong before training camp, but I’m surprised to see him surpass my expectations and perform even better. Let’s hope that he can sustain this level of performance into the regular season.
Justin Fields Quick Passing Game Has Gotten Better
Justin appears to have made significant progress in a crucial aspect of his game. His efficiency in the short passing game, an area where Fields struggled last season, seems to have improved during training camp. He seems to be prioritizing hitting his check downs more consistently. The scrambles are still there, as they rightfully should be, given that his legs will always be a dangerous part of his game.
Defense Might Be More Talented Than Many People Believed
I’m really excited about the developments on defense leading into the 2023 season. Both veteran players like Jaylon Johnson and Eddie Jackson, as well as rookies CB Tyrique Stevenson and CB Terell Smith, have shined among many other players. The defense’s improvement means that Justin Fields and the offense will likely have more opportunities with the ball. Last season, the defense struggled to make crucial stops, but that’s expected to change this year. The recent addition of DE Yannick Ngakoue should help make sure that happens. Dave and Ficky, of the BFR Podcast, provided insightful analysis on the impact of Yannick Ngakoue’s signing for the Bears.
One underrated aspect, is that the Bears hold the top pick via the waiver wire until the second week of the NFL season. This will help improve the team’s depth on both offense and defense. Which means this team will only get better.
The preseason will provide valuable information into the performance of these young players as they will be put in actual game scenarios. Again, we are almost there. Just five more days and we will be able to watch this Bears team in action.
