College of Marin will host a two-day “Equity in Mental Health Symposium” Thursday and Friday.
The event, held jointly with the Umoja Equity Institute and Marin County Behavioral Health and Recovery Services, will run from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. both days on the campus at 835 College Ave.

DUI checkpoint
planned Sept. 1
Novato police will hold a DUI checkpoint on Sept. 1.
Drivers will be screened at an undisclosed location within the city limits.
Funding for the checkpoint comes from a grant administered by the state Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

for Maui fire victims
Burns Florist is collecting donations for fire victims in Maui.
Items sought include luggage, camping gear; flashlights and batteries; garbage and sandwich bags; canned food; feminine hygiene products; items for mothers, including diapers, breast pumps, baby food and formula; pet food; air mattresses; new bedding and cellphone cords. No clothing or water bottles will be accepted.
Items will be collected through 6 p.m. Friday. The business is located at 1414 Fourth St.

Speakers group to
discuss policing
The Marin Coalition will hold a talk on law enforcement on Sept. 11.
“Policing In Marin – Community Input and Action,” a followup to a panel talk featuring law enforcement officers, is set for 7 p.m. via teleconference.
IJ columnist Noah Griffin will moderate. Panelists include community activist and nonprofit founder Paul Austin; Tammy Edmonson and Celimene Pastor, members of the Mill Valley Force for Racial Equity and Empowerment; and Cesar Lagleva, an activist and adjunct professor of psychology at Dominican University of California.
