My hair is completely broken and fried after straightening treatment went wrong – my wedding is ruined
EVERY bride wants to look and feel beautiful on their wedding day.
But Catherine Batista was left sobbing after getting a Japanese straightening treatment done on her hair three weeks before her big day that left her hair fried and snapping off.
Taking to social media, the bride-to-be had tears streaming down her face as she wondered how she could salvage her hair for her wedding day.
Catherine revealed that she had naturally curly hair which she had been straightening with a treatment for years with no issues, only this time, she went to a completely different hair salon – and it didn’t go well.
Michelle Hong, founder, and creative director of NYC The Team explained that Japanese hair straightening treatments use chemicals to restructure hair bonds from curly to pin-straight.
Michelle Hong, founder, and creative director of NYC The Team explained that Japanese hair straightening treatments use chemicals to restructure hair bonds from curly to pin-straight.
“It seemed weird from the beginning,” she recalled.
“Like, they went to put the product on my hair, and every time that I’ve done it, they don’t put it directly on the root.
“Like, they started a little bit off of the root because it’s not good for it to touch the root of your hair.
“But this woman just like, lathered it all on there.”
But Catherine wasn’t about to argue with the professional as she assumed she knew what she was doing.
The next red flag for the bride-to-be was that the hairdresser left the product on for around 50 minutes when usually it’s left on for 20 she claimed.
The real horror struck Catherine when she got the Japanese Hair Straightening treatment washed out, as the hairstylist combed her hair, massive clumps of locks fell from her head.
According to Catherine, the hairdresser looked like a ghost as she saw the damage that had been caused, but lied and said everything looked great.
Catherine continued: “It didn’t sound very believable.
“So I, like, turned around and, like, looked at the ground, and, like, my entire head of hair was basically laying on the floor.”
Now home, Catherine revealed she hadn’t stopped crying for the past five hours as she lifted up the broken pieces of hair left on her scalp.
Not only had hair snapped off, there were bald patches and the hair along her scalp was completely fried.
She revealed the damage was so bad other hairdressers had refused to put extensions in her hair so she was now looking for a wig to wear at her wedding and was hoping to get help on TikTok to fund them.
“I’m looking for wigs,” she added.
“I’ve never worn a wig before.
“I don’t. I don’t really know what I’m doing. And there’s like bald spots on my head now and I just, I don’t know what to do.
“I have like three weeks to figure something out. So I’m hoping there’s like hairdressers, dermatologists, I don’t know, lawyers like, who can help me get compensation for the $3,000 dollars in wigs that I’m gonna have to spend.”
Hairdresser Michelle added that the treatment can cause severe damage to hair, especially if it is done multiple times.
She explained to Byrdie: “Multiple sessions of Japanese straightening, or straightening on top of highlighted hair, can severely damage the hair.”
However, she warned a good hair stylist should examine the hair beforehand to make sure the hair can take the treatment.
The video posted to Catherine’s TikTok account @cat_batista has since gone viral with over three million views and over 150k likes.
People were quick to share their thoughts in the comments of the post, one wrote: “Pause. Three weeks before your wedding you went to a new salon!?!!”
“Trip before the wedding. So I found this reputable salon that does the same treatment closer to me. Now I wish I had just waited until after to go back,” replied Catherine.
Another commented: “Oh love I’m so sorry that happened! I’m a hairstylist and that shouldn’t have happened… consult a lawyer and your state board of cosmetology.”
“My heart breaks for you, hope you get a solution, ps you are beautiful,” penned a third.
