Report: How Tottenham’s homegrown numbers look at the start of the season
Football.London have revealed that Tottenham are currently three over the limit of the number of non-homegrown players allowed for the Premier League squad.
Tottenham will have to name a 25-man squad to the Premier League following the closure of the summer transfer window on September 2.
Out of the 25, only a maximum of 17 can be non-homegrown players, with the other eight having to be homegrown. Clubs can also name an unlimited number of Under-21 players, who do not need to be part of the 25-man squad.
Football.London explain that following the arrival of Micky van de Ven from Wolfsburg and the exits of Joe Rodon, Harry Winks, and Harry Kane, Spurs now have 20 non-homegrown players, which is three over the limit.
The club also have a total of 31 players, which is six over the limit of the total squad size they can submit to the Premier League.
Tottenham still need to trim their squad down
The report states that the potential departures of Hugo Lloris, Sergio Reguilon, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, Tanguy Ndombele and potentially one of Davinson Sanchez or Eric Dier, could free up space for non-homegrown players.
Additionally, some homegrown options such as Djed Spence and Japhet Tanganga could also leave, which would further help shrink the size of the bloated squad.
The outlet also points out that the likes of Destiny Udogie, Ashley Phillips and Alejo Veliz can be named in the Under-21s list alongside Pape Matar Sarr, Alfie Devine, Dane Scarlett and Troy Parrott (if they are not loaned out).
Spurs Web Opinion
With at least five non-homegrown players expected to leave before the transfer window closes, Tottenham would have no issues bringing the number down to 17. So, unlike the previous couple of transfer windows, the club are under no pressure to look for homegrown signings.
