“It’s dumb, just come have fun!” the slogan reads on social media platforms for the national touring Shrek Rave, and it’s enough for rave-goers to almost sell out the House Of Blues in Anaheim on Friday night, Aug. 18.
“Shrek” was first released in May 2001, delivering classic sequels and spin-offs. Although it’s been roughly 13 years since a Shrek film hit theaters, fans were still out in force to celebrate the beloved characters and film for the rave touring North America with more than 32 stops.

The mostly millennial and Gen-Z crowd was gathered in the venue decked out with ogre ears, tiaras, neon, blind mice, donkeys, wings and plenty of Lord Farquaads in the mix, too. As fans lined up at the door for the night to begin, those curious enough to ask attendees what they were doing were met with loud cheers of “Shrek Rave! Shrek is life,” followed by a few laughs.
Once inside, fans were greeted at the bar with Shrek-inspired cocktails, with names like All Stargarita, Adios Mother Farquaad and Donkey Punch, but Fiona’s Love Potion seemed to be the crowd favorite of the night.
And of course, music for the event mainly consisted of Shrek songs from the franchise with favorites “Funkytown” by Lipps Inc, “All Star” by Smash Mouth, “Livin’ La Vida Loca” by Ricky Martin, “Accidentally In Love” by Counting Crows and Rufus Wainwright’s version of “Hallelujah.”
There were a few DJs in rotation, with Melissa Brooks from the Los Angeles rock act The Aquadolls, DJ Synova and Los Angeles-based DJ Cam Girl on the decks, each one bringing their own unique spin on EDM classics and hits from the early 2000s. Each artist made sure to get people to scream, “Shrek is love, Shrek is life,” at the end of each set.
Behind the DJ booth was a large screen that displayed all things Shrek-related, just with a more psychedelic and humorous twist, as Puss In Boots was seen twerking and playing his own set of DJ decks on screen. Or Shrek, ultimately going wild doing the macarena in his swamp that got many fans in the crowd to cheer.
Whether attendees came for a bit of humor or to dance with other avid fans, everyone was obliged to live out the Shrek fantasy for one night.
