Opinion: Five things we learned from Tottenham’s 2-0 win over Man United
Tottenham Hotspur are up and running under Ange Postecoglou, securing their first three points of the season and extending their unbeaten run despite playing Brentford away and Man United at home.
Let’s take a look at the five things we learned:
Pape Matar Starboy –
This kid looks special. When it comes to that midfield three, Postecoglou needs players who can drive up and down the pitch, defend, tackle, and intercept but also chip in with goals and creativity. Well, Pape Matar Sarr just put in a 75-minute advert that he can do all of the above. The youngster was everywhere today! I don’t think anyone on the pitch turned over possession more than him, but he also used it so cleverly to get Spurs up the pitch, and then even put the Lilywhites ahead!
Ange Postecoglou taking a minute –
At the end of the match, Ange Postecoglou applauded the home fans and took a moment to himself inside the centre circle, taking in the atmosphere of his first Tottenham Hotspur Stadium game, his first big win, and his new home. It very much feels like fans, players, and management are aligned for the first time since Pochettino and 2019.
The forward line –
Tottenham have now scored four goals in the league and secured four points from a possible six, all without any of the forwards netting. That is a great sign for Postecoglou who will want his goals coming from all over the pitch in this attacking formation. Romero, Emerson, Sarr and Davies (kind of) are off the mark now, and one Sonny, Richarlison, and Kulusevski start finding their shooting boots, Spurs are going to have some crazy xG stats.
Mousa Dembele? Is that you?
Yves Bissouma is quickly becoming one of the most popular members of this new-look Spurs side, and because of his injuries and lack of faith from Conte last season, he very much is like a new signing. The way he moves his hips and drops his shoulders, it’s like watching prime Mousa Dembele at times, and that is very high praise indeed. I think Postecoglou needs his pivot to be that kind of player you can trust to never lose or waste the ball, and Yves looks to be taking to that role like a duck to water.
Dele and Eriksen back at the Lane –
Dele Alli was watching on this evening from the director’s box alongside Eric Dier, and some of the fans treated him to a rendition of his old song on the 20th minute. Meanwhile, Christian Eriksen was back in Tottenham again, and almost forgot who he was playing for when he slipped in his own box and nearly presented Spurs with a tap-in. The fans gave him a warm reception and he could be seen hugging and catching up with the likes of Lo Celso and Sanchez during his touchline warm-ups.
