Each week, Catholic Masses are celebrated in over 40 languages across the Archdiocese of Los Angeles.
Archbishop José H. Gomez celebrated the region’s ethnic and cultural diversity at the “One Mother, Many Peoples” mass and procession on Saturday, Aug. 26 at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels in downtown L.A.
A Votive Mass was celebrated in honor of Our Lady of the Angels, patroness of L.A. and the Archdiocese. Representatives of nearly 40 ethnic communities, along with religious from papal orders and fraternal service orders, gathered to pray for peace and unity, a news release said.
The event featured traditional dances and multilingual prayers, with many from across the region dressed in cultural attire.
Organizers said they hope to invoke the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary to bring L.A.’s diverse communities closer together and closer to Jesus.
Ten years after the founding of Mission San Gabriel Arcángel in 1781, the first church in the L.A. Archdiocese, a diverse group set forth from the Mission to found the city of Los Angeles on September 4, 1781 — under the patronage of Our Lady of the Angels.
People from myriad cultures could be seen in L.A.’s Downtown cathedral during the service.
Referring to Mary, the mother of Jesus Christ, Gomez said during his homily on Saturday evening: “We are her children. Each one of us, we have one mother, Do you see one mother and where we are? Many peoples. And today we come to her from every nation in faith and feeling love. Today, we are celebrating once again the beautiful diverse cultures and languages that make up the one family of God in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles.”
Gomez added: “We implore her intercession for our city. And for our country. And for all countries. And for the whole world. We pray today especially for our families and our children. We ask her, Mary, our blessed mother, to turn her eyes of mercy toward us. And to look upon us in her maternal care.”
