Indian teacher investigated for telling students to slap Muslim classmate
Indian police probe video of a teacher instructing students to slap seven-year-old Muslim classmate.
The boy is seen crying as he is slapped, reportedly for making mistakes in his timetables.
The video, widely shared on social media, has sparked significant distress and criticism.
The incident occurred in Muzaffarnagar, Uttar Pradesh, leading to widespread outrage.
Police viewed the viral video and plan to involve the Education Department in teacher action. The Muslim boy prompts an investigation into potential communal intent due to the teacher’s divisive language, confirmed by police.
“We have taken cognizance of a viral video where a woman teacher is getting some school students to hit a classmate for not learning Mathematics tables. We have also spoken to the school principal about the objectionable comment in the video,” Superintendent of Police Satyanarayan Prajapat said in a video statement on social media X, as cited by NDTV.
Meanwhile, opposition leader Rahul Gandhi of India criticized the government, holding it responsible for fueling religious intolerance.
“Sowing the poison of discrimination in the minds of innocent children, turning a holy place like school into a marketplace of hatred – nothing worse a teacher can do for the country. This is the same kerosene spread by the BJP, which has set every corner of India on fire. Children are the future of India – do not hate them, we all have to teach love together,” Congress MP Rahul Gandhi posted on social media X, as cited by NDTV.
“Why are you hitting him so lightly? “Hit him hard,” instructs the teacher as the tearful boy stands before the other children.
“Start hitting him on the waist… His face is turning red; hit him on the waist instead,” she added.
The boy’s father will not press charges, having reached a compromise with the school. He will not send his child there again; the school refunded the fees, closing the matter.
Meanwhile, Rights groups caution that hate crimes have surged against India’s Muslim minority under PM Modi’s tenure since 2014. Uttar Pradesh, led by BJP since 2017, faces similar concerns.
However, during a US visit in June, PM Modi assured journalists that India holds “no room for discrimination.”
