Newcastle vs Liverpool: Reds look to build on Bournemouth win against wounded Magpies – stream, TV channel, team news
LIVERPOOL travel further north to take on a Newcastle side later today.
Julian Alvarez’s 31st-minute strike was enough to see Manchester City beat the Magpies at the Etihad last weekend.
And Eddie Howe will be determined for his men to find the form that saw Newcastle thrash Aston Villa 5-1 on the opening weekend.
However, the Toon go up against a Liverpool side who just comfortably beat Bournemouth despite going a goal down in three minutes.
Furthermore, it was a day to forget for the hosts when the sides last met at St. James’ Park.
Newcastle went 2-0 down inside 17 minutes after quick-fire strikes from Darwin Nunez and Cody Gakpo.
Goalkeeper Nick Pope was then shown a straight red in the 22nd minute.
The result saw Liverpool do the double over the Magpies last term.
Alexander Isak struck first at Anfield a year ago.
But Fabio Carvalho’s 98th minute winner saw the Reds take all three points.
What is their form like?
Newcastle: 1 W (5-1 vs Aston Villa), 1 L (1-0 vs Man City)
Liverpool: 1 D (1-1 vs Chelsea, 1 W (3-1 vs Bournemouth)
Team news
Eddie Howe will have to continue without Joe Willock who is out with a hamstring issue, while Emil Krafth and Javier Manquillo are unlikely to play a part too.
But Joelinton is available after limping off in the City defeat, while Lewis Hall could make his debut following his move from Chelsea.
As for Liverpool, Thiago Alcantara is still ruled out with his long-term hip injury, with Curtis Jones and Ibrahima Konate doubtful.
But Alexis Mac Allister is now eligible with Liverpool winning the appeal to overturn his controversial red card, while Trent Alexander-Arnold is expected to be fit.
Who will be the star men?
Newcastle: Alexander Isak
The striker hit the net twice in the thrashing of Villa.
And after drawing a blank against City, the Swede is due a goal this weekend.
Liverpool: Luis Diaz
Looks better than ever after last season’s injury problems.
Diaz has scored in both of Liverpool’s games so far and will be desperate to keep his run going.
What have the managers said:
Newcastle boss Eddie Howe: “I have a huge amount of respect for Jurgen and his coaching team. If you love football, I don’t think you cannot have that respect, but we’re competing against each other so you’re fighting for everything. You’re fighting for every point.
“These games are iconic – Newcastle vs Liverpool battles. Last year we were disappointed with the two defeats. The last minute of that Anfield game has replayed in my mind many times.
“The game at home was also painful in a different way. It was a day we didn’t start very well but we played well with ten men.
“I respect Jurgen a lot, I think he’s done an unbelievable job, he’s an unbelievable manager, but I draw the line at friendships because they don’t exist for me against competitors.”
Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp: “An away game at Newcastle and they are an incredibly strong team, super development under Howe, smart business.
“Two standouts are Tonali and Barnes, really good. Super intense style. Massive atmosphere, so this is a tough one.”
“They are in the Champions League very deservedly.”
SunSport’s prediction
It’s a hard one to call, but Newcastle’s rock-solid defence is likely to hold up on Sunday.
Liverpool should have lost to Chelsea and were lucky to cling on against Bournemouth.
And we are predicting a narrow win for the hosts.
