You often don’t know what the problem is, what the repair might cost and whether you’re visiting a reputable mechanic.

But put the boot on the other foot – will you be a pleasant customer or a pain in the rear bumper?

Winding up the worker who’s going to fix your car isn’t a good idea – and could even convince them to hike their labour rates.

Firstly customers should not ask how long it will take for their car to be fixed, the mechanic told the Express.

Delays in work and waiting for parts can happen. Providing they keep you in the loop then understand.

You may be frustrated, but they will often be doing their best – they want to get the work finished, paid and out the garage as much as you.

Next, arguing on how expensive parts are will rile up a mechanic.

You need to be wary and have a general idea of what you should be charged.

You can negotiate to get a deal but car parts can be expensive – it’s not their fault.

Finally motorists should not tell mechanics “I was going to take my car elsewhere, but you were the closest place”.

The mechanic may take offense to it so try to get off to a good start with the new garage.
