Sports briefs: Novato rallies for win against Irvington
Quarterback Dominic Scafani picked up a muffed snap and ran 55 yards for a touchdown, lifting the Novato High football team to a 14-13 road win against Irvington on Saturday night.
Scafani’s scramble came with about 5 minutes left in the game and put Novato in front for the final margin. Scafani also scored the opening touchdown for the Hornets (1-0), scoring on a 50-yard run to put Novato up 7-0 in the first quarter. All told, Scafani ran for 160 yards and threw for 55 yards.
Irvington scored all 13 of its points in the second quarter. Martin Ries came up with a game-sealing interception with 9 seconds left on the clock. Irvington had driven into Novato territory on its final drive of the game.
Tyler Smith led the Hornets with 17 tackles on defense, including one tackle for loss.
Girls volleyball
Terra Linda put together a 2-2 record, including a win against the hosts, while competing at the Marin Academy tournament on Saturday.
The Trojans (6-2) took losses against Windsor and Lincoln (San Francisco) then closed the day with a two-set win against Bishop O’Dowd and a three-setter against Marin Academy.
The host Wildcats (1-4) dropped games to Windsor, Lincoln and the Trojans.
