Michael Cohen 'appalled' at 'royal treatment' Trump received during surrender in Georgia
Former Trump attorney Michael Cohen said he was “appalled” at what he called the “royal treatment” the former president received when he surrendered to authorities in Georgia over the 2020 election fraud case in the state.
“I mean, look at what's going on here. We're watching as Donald Trump — and I was appalled, to be honest with you, while watching the news and watching how Donald was brought to the Fulton County Jail,” Cohen told MSNBC’s Ali Velshi in a Saturday interview. “Forty motorcade in New Jersey, 40 motorcade in Georgia — why? He's nothing more than an indicted defendant.”
“How much money did it cost the American taxpayers? How much money did it cost the people of Atlanta in order to put all the police officers? For what? For this man to roll up like he's, you know, Caesar coming through the gates of Rome after victory? He is an indicted defendant on 91 counts, he should not be given this sort of royal treatment,” he added.
Roads between the airport in Atlanta and the Fulton County Jail were blocked off Thursday as Trump traveled to surrender after being indicted on 13 charges related to his and his allies’ alleged efforts to overturn the 2020 presidential election in the state. This was Trump's fourth indictment this year.
Trump was charged alongside 18 other co-defendants, who Cohen previously claimed would face “destruction” if any of them turned on the former president. Some of the former president's co-defendants include his former attorneys Rudy Giuliani and John Eastman, as well as his former chief of staff Mark Meadows.
Cohen, a longtime fixer for Trump who has become one of his former boss's most vocal critics, has also repeatedly criticized Trump for opting not to pay his co-defendants’ legal bills, arguing it encourages them to flip.
“Donald doesn’t care about you. He doesn’t care about you one bit,” he argued. “He will use you as the scapegoat, and the system will use you as the scapegoat in order to get somebody.”
Trump received a mug shot when he was booked at the jail in Georgia last week. He later recounted the "terrible experience."
“It is not a comfortable feeling — especially when you’ve done nothing wrong,” he told Fox Digital about the mug shot.
