Commanders President Makes Definitive Statement About Redskins Nickname

0

Team president Jason Wright has no desire to change the franchise’s nickname from Commanders back to the Redskins.

Washington removed the Redskins as its nickname in July 2020. Many Native American leaders advocated for the franchise to change its nickname for decades.

In February ’22, Washington changed its name to the Commanders, completing the task after spending two seasons as the “Washington Football Team.” However, Daniel Fazzolare recently drafted a petition urging fans of the franchise to consider changing the name from the Commanders back to the Redskins.

During a Wednesday appearance on 106.7 The Fan, Wright was very blunt on his stance on if the team would change its name.

“It is not being considered,” Wright said, per Nicki Jhabvala of The Washington Post. “Period.”

While Wright stated that the Commanders will remain as the team’s moniker, Fazzolare believes the franchise “restoring its original name is the right decision for the team, its loyal fanbase and the legacy it represents.”

“The name “Redskins” carries deep cultural, historical, and emotional significance, honoring the bravery, resilience, and warrior spirit associated with Native American culture. It was never intended as a derogatory or offensive term but as a symbol of respect and admiration,” the petition read.

“… We acknowledge the concerns surrounding cultural sensitivity and the need to foster inclusivity. … The name "Commanders" fails to capture the essence, tradition, and historical weight associated with the Redskins.”

Washington will begin the ’23 NFL season on Sept. 10 against the Cardinals.
