Broke Labour-run council blew cash on wheelie bin survey asking residents their sexuality
A BROKE council blew taxpayers’ cash on a wheelie bin survey which asked residents if they were gay, straight or bisexual.
It was one of the bizarre projects funded by Labour-run Birmingham city council.
The authority declared itself, in effect, bankrupt this week after racking up millions in debt.
Residents were asked to indicate their sexual orientation in the “About You” part of the online poll — estimated to have cost tens of thousands of pounds.
Earlier this year, Brum squandered money on Britain’s shortest cycle lane — just 7ft long.
Farcical road schemes also included placing 60 bollards outside a primary school to stop parents parking — a move branded “over the top” by residents.
Mum Jessica Grant, 38, called it a “weird slalom of posts more suited to the Winter Olympics”.
The council is still trying to recruit an equalities lead on nearly £60,000 a year despite its woes.
Data shows it already has 11 full-time diversity and equality officers.
The council hosted the 2022 Commonwealth Games and blamed its crisis on “unprecedented financial challenges” and its requirement to pay historical equal pay claims.
The council’s Tory group leader Robert Alden said: “All around the city one can see the legacy of Birmingham Labour’s wanton waste of taxpayers’ money”.
