Sports briefs: Host Tam takes second at volleyball tourney
Natalia Clifford had 33 kills and 31 digs to help the Tam High girls volleyball team post a 4-1 record at the tournament it hosted on Saturday.
Tam advanced to the gold bracket final, falling against Carondelet 26-24, 25-23. Tam beat Convent and Albany in pool play, beat Petaluma in the crossover game then dropped Archbishop Riordan in the gold semifinals.
Natalie Stanford had 29 kills on the day, Malia Parson had 32 digs and Emmeline Sandgren had 64 assists, 10 kills and eight aces for the Red-tailed Hawks (13-3).
Terra Linda also made its way into the gold bracket semifinals, losing to Carondelet. TL (10-5) won Pool 3 by beating Vallejo and Bay then took down cross-town rival San Rafael in the crossover game.
The Bulldogs (12-6) went 1-1 in pool play, defeated Convent in the silver bracket semifinals then lost to Bay in that final.
San Domenico (2-7) went winless in pool play but defeated Vallejo in the bronze semifinals before losing to Albany in the bronze final.
- Elsa Kehoe had 12 kills and 20 digs in a losing effort as San Rafael fell to Saint Mary’s 25-20, 25-20, 20-25, 25-20 on Friday night. Jane Stanley (14 assists, 13 digs), Audrey Merk (17 digs, five kills), Faith Pu’u (six blocks) and Olivia Dugan (24 digs) were among the standouts for the Bulldogs (10-3).
- Bailey Barmaki dished out 24 assists, had three kills and served up three aces as Marin Academy defeated San Domenico 25-20, 25-15, 25-21 on Friday night.
Men’s soccer
Diego Grande scored early in the first half and Joe Blakely scored early in the second half to lift Dominican University to a 2-1 victory against Cal State Monterey Bay on Saturday.
The Penguins (2-1-1) have several former Marin prep standouts on the roster this season, including Nylmar Gonzalez De Leon, Chris Barrios and Norman Tellez from San Rafael High, plus Brian Diaz from Redwood.
The Penguins also hung their PacWest championship banner from last season, the first in program history. Dominican went 8-2 in conference last season and 12-6 overall.
Women’s volleyball
Dominican remained winless so far this season despite getting 12 digs from Miekayla Surnip in a 3-0 loss to Cal State San Bernardino on Saturday.
The game was the second of the day for the Penguins at the Seawolf Classic at Sonoma State. Dominican (0-7) also fell 3-0 against Cal State Dominguez Hills.
