Sports Briefs: Terra Linda, San Rafael tennis teams bond in difficult times
Rival players from Terra Linda and San Rafael bonded over tragedy and tennis Tuesday before the Trojans’ 6-1 victory over the Bulldogs. San Rafael players showed their support during the match for Terra Linda’s Amelia Stafford, who was severely injured over the weekend and did not play. The Bulldogs, hosting the Trojans, painted the No. 7 on their shoulders to represent Stafford, who is seventh on Terra Linda ladder.
The Trojans’ Kylie Lee, Jamie Schmidt, Emelia Frost and Sahaj Malik swept singles play.
San Rafael’s Emi Villenueve and Mackenzie Benson won the No. 1 doubles match, 6-1, 6-0.
• San Marin swept crosstown rival Novato, 7-0, Tuesday, with Clare Zhu setting the bar for the Mustangs at No. 1 singles in a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Zoe Csizmadia-Zinnes. Ava Kaplan Brooke Bested and Aashna Selvaraj rounded out singles play for San Marin with wins at Nos. 2-4, respectively.
• Tam High swept the first three singles matches off the court en route to a 5-2 victory over Marin Catholic on Tuesday. The Red-tailed Hawks’ Maria-Jose Stuart, Annika Hakes and Louise McGinness took wins at Nos. 2-4 singles, respectively. A win at No. 2 doubles by Natalie Popper and Gray Blankfort clinched the win.
Boys water polo
Defending North Coast Section Division 2 champion Terra Linda defeated a newcomer, San Domenico, 16-6 on Tuesday. San Domenico only recently established its boys and girls water polo programs.
Sophomore Cameron Hellar led the Trojans with four goals and two assists, while juniors Soren Jessen and Jack Middleton each had three goals and an assist. Junior Andrew Chong tallied two goals and four assists.
• Nine different Tam players scored as the Red-Tailed Hawks rolled to a 15-3 win over San Marin in the MCAL opener in Mill Valley. Junior Reed Hanna scored four goals and had four steals to lead Tam. Junior Andrew Sternfels added three goals and sophomore Declan Murphy notched two more for the Hawks (3-0, 1-0). Fields Palmer and Wes Attinger added two assists each.
Girls water polo
Sophomore Josephine Fetterman-Riggle came off the bench to score a team-best five goals as Terra Linda routed San Domenico, 19-2, Tuesday. Senior Julia Hamilton and juniors Emily Erickson and Jessa Dunn each had three goals and one assist for the Trojans.
Girls volleyball
Kate Lane and Muriel Harris had double-digit kills to lead Marin Academy to a 25-12, 25-14, 25-18 win against COnvent of the Sacred Heart on Tuesday night. Lane paced the Wildcats (5-6) with 16 kills, Harris had 10 and the duo combined for five blocks. Noa Friedman-Lowenthal and Kirsten Wang anchored the defense with a combined 28 digs.
• Tam got a slew of assists from both Emmeline Sandgren and Annie Payne in a big 28-26, 25-16, 25-20 win against University on Monday night. Sandgren had a team-high 24 assists while Payne dished out 20. Natalia Clifford had a big game with 13 kills, 16 digs, four blocks and three aces. Natalie Stanford and Zoe Lyko posted identical stat lines of seven kills and four blocks for Tam (14-3).
Field hockey
Lucy Jeffers scored the deciding goal as Redwood defeated Tam, 1-0, Tuesday. Samantha Haan assisted on the Giants goal.
Girls golf
Redwood extended its undefeated season Tuesday with a 167-243 win over Terra Linda at the Meadow Club. Katherine Lim led the Giants (11-0) with a 40 and Katelyn Van Dusen hit a 42. Zohie Betts paced the Trojans with a 49.
Men’s soccer
Marin scored the opening goal before host Hartnell closed out Tuesday’s game with a 4-1 victory over the Mariners (2-4), who are scheduled to host the College of the Redwoods on Thursday.
