Sir Keir Starmer ‘shamelessly’ tried to deceive the public over illegal migration measures, it’s claimed
SIR Keir Starmer “shamelessly” tried to deceive the public over illegal migration measures, it is claimed.
Ministers last night blasted the Labour leader for flip-flopping when he ruled out a returns scheme after hinting at a deal with the EU.
He had suggested the UK would accept migrants in exchange for sending back those who arrive illegally.
On Sky News, he said: “There is obviously an EU quota system for EU members. We will not be part of that. We are not an EU member.”
Sir Keir — who is due to meet France’s President Emmanuel Macron this week — added: “This is why what the Government’s saying, it’s been complete garbage.”
Home Office Minister Robert Jenrick said: “Labour thought offering to take hundreds of thousands of illegal migrants from the safety of the EU was a ‘solution’. Their ‘plan’ has already fallen apart.
“The truth is Labour won’t take the tough, but necessary action to stop the boats.
“Sir Keir shamelessly tries to deceive the British public he cares about illegal migration. He doesn’t and the Labour Party never will.
“He doesn’t have the stomach for this fight. His every instinct is for open borders.”
Tory party chair Greg Hands added: “Labour’s policy announcement on Thursday is now ‘complete nonsense’ by Sunday. You can’t trust a word Sir Keir says.”
PM Rishi Sunak has already pledged to ‘stop the boats’ carrying migrants on perilous journeys across the Channel.
The government’s £120million Rwanda plan that will see asylum-seekers sent to Africa to be processed is being held up in the courts.
