SPAIN: Los Altos residents Fred Linker and Mary Fran Miller cycled the Andalusia region with VBT Tours in May. “En route from Córdoba to Jaén, we rode on one of Spain´s Vías Verdes — ‘greenways or rails-to-trails paths,” Mary Fran says. “The tour highlights included guided visits to UNESCO sites in the Alcazar in Seville, the Mezquita in Córdoba and the Alhambra Palace in Granada.”

TRAVEL TIPS: “Andalusia is referred to as ‘The Frying Pan of Spain’ due to its high temperatures in summer. Spring and fall are ideal times to travel to avoid the heat — and the crowds. That said, be prepared for possible unseasonable heat waves, such as the one that occurred when we visited in early May. If hot weather is forecast, it’s best to get an early start, take a break in the late afternoon and early evening when the heat peaks, and dine after sunset.
“Besides timing your travel dates for comfortable weather, check the official calendars of festivals as a memorable way to experience Spanish culture. We selected our tour date to coincide with La Fiesta de los Patios de Córdoba. This is a 12-day festival and competition in which the public can view private courtyards in bloom.”
