Indian rescuers are searching for over 100 missing people after a flash flood caused by a glacial lake bursting its banks. Glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs) occur when water collected in former glacier beds is suddenly released. Climate change is increasing the risk of GLOFs by causing the retreat of glaciers and the formation of glacial lakes. The volume of glacial lakes has increased by 50% in 30 years.
