I’m a dog expert – the 6 worst breeds I wouldn’t recommend for first time owners & the background checks you need to do
A DOG EXPERT has revealed the breeds to avoid if you’re a first time owner.
Will Atherton, from the UK, took to social media to warn those wanting pets to avoid these breeds if they have no prior experience with owning a dog.
The dog expert said: “Breeds that are going to be terrible for first time owners are going to be ones that have extreme violence in their breed histories.”
Therefore, it’s important to do lots of background research on the breed you have your eye on.
“Breeds that were bred for fighting, breeds that were breed for hunting, breeds that were breed, not just for genuinely not just scaring off humans, but causing them serious harm,” he added.
These types of breeds are going to be very independent, confident and prone to violent behaviour – making them seriously hard to train if you have had no former experience with dogs.
Will went on to list some of the breeds that fall under these categories.
They included the American Pit Bull Terrier; “Unfortunately, I love the breed but that is the reality,” he said.
The Tosa Inu, Dogo Argentino, Presser Canaria, Caucasian Shepherd and Turkish Kangal also made Will’s list.
He warned: “All need absolute expert levels of experience, handling, skill and assertive, confident leadership to keep them under control and safe canine companions.”
Of course, while these dogs need an owner with lots of experience, all dog breeds need to be trained.
The clip posted to his TikTok account @iamwillatherton quickly went viral with over 37k views and over 2,000 likes.
People were quick to share their thoughts in the comments section of the post.
One person wrote: “THE CHOW CHOW.”
Another commented: “100% love and agree with this.”
“So if i want one of those dog I need to get a dog that I don’t want just to get experience?” asked a third.
Meanwhile a fourth said: “I have never in my life met a “confident, independent” pit Bull. I have 3, they are glued to me every second I’m home and we unlock new fears daily.”
“It’s funny that two of those breeds are banned in the U.K. sadly our government doesn’t recognise that it’s the human element that’s the big problem,” claimed a fifth.
Someone else added: “If your a first time do owner don’t get a Husky. Stubborn mules they are.”
