gh3* among firms leading restoration of historical French artist studio, Atelier 11
Plans were recently unveiled for the restoration of Atelier 11, a historical artist studio and residence in Paris, France.
Atelier 11 was built in the 1870s and has housed working artists for more than 150 years. It is the only remaining active studio of the original group of studios at Cité Falguière in Montparnasse.
The Atelier 11 architectural project is being led by Canadian architecture firm gh3* and French firm TNT Architecture, with the advice of Studio Gang (USA/Paris), FREAKS (Paris, France) and the Fondation du Patrimoine heritage architect.
With Paris implementing net-zero standards across the city, the restoration and renovation project aims to decarbonize the existing building as well as to protect and restore its artistic and cultural legacy.
The design features various strategies such as the re-use of the existing building which will preserve and highlight its existing timber structure. Any new construction will be of lightweight wood. Reclaimed materials found in the original Atelier will also be re-used whenever possible.
A high-performing envelope will be achieved by repairing and insulating the exterior walls as well as restoring and replicating original windows as energy efficient ones in order to improve energy usage.
Overall energy consumption will be further reduced through the use of double-flow ventilation with heat-recovery. This will allowing for natural cross-ventilation, optimizing natural daylight, and installing energy efficient electric systems, lighting fixtures, and appliances.
Additionally, the use of natural gas will be completely eliminated and replaced with electric heating.
This project seeks to sustain its artistic heritage and will feature a fully restored front exterior facade, traditional limewash painted wall finishes, and red terracotta floors.
A recipient of Mission Patrimoine 2022, Atelier 11 Cité Falguière is scheduled to reopen after the restoration in 2024/2025, which will fully transition it from a historical artist studio to an International Arts Research Residency.
Once the building has been restored, it will continue to function as an artist residence, studio, research library and exhibition space.
Plans for the restoration of Atelier 11 were officially unveiled on October 13 and 14, 2023.
