I wasn’t sure my crazy kitchen renovation idea would work – I got what I needed on Facebook, people say it’s ‘genius’
A HOME decor guru has proven that sometimes outside of the box ideas can make for the best improvement projects.
She might have liked the thought, but she wasn’t sure if her design dream could actually be made into a reality.
“I had a crazy idea for my kitchen renovation, but I was not sure it was going to work,” said the home expert behind (@peonyandhoney).
She asked a construction professional something he surely hadn’t heard before – if he might be able to turn a Victorian bed frame into a hood vent.
The answer both surprised and delighted her.
“He’s like, what if you flipped it upside down?” she said.
She had only one thing to say: “Genius.”
The motivated DIYer then purchased a late 1800s Victorian twin bed frame on Facebook Marketplace for less than $200.
The decor guru said she knew it “was going to be perfect.”
She tasked the transformation to the same worker who had previously built her custom island.
Still, she didn’t just sit back and wait for the project to be complete.
She made a trip to Home Depot to grab some of the framing supplies herself so that they could get started on framing out the hood vent.
“He started by building a box on the ground of 2 x 4’s to be the support framing,” she explained.
Other preparations included cutting out a section of crown molding in order to make the hood vent go all the way to the ceiling.
Next up was the installation of another framing box on the ceiling as well as side and back supports.
Then she got back to work.
“I helped him take apart the actual bed frame which was made up of a bunch of different pieces of red oak.”
She also described another unique element of the project.
“We thought it would be really cool to add the original bed posts as the side of my hood vent so we cut those down to size.”
In the finishing steps, the contractor nailed the first piece of the bed frame across the front of the hood vent.
He also took the decorative emblem at the top of the wooden frame and nailed it into the front of that.
“The rest was just cutting down the pieces to size and nailing them in with a pin nailer across the front and the sides.”
Still in disbelief, the now obsessed DIYer seemed to have certainly nailed her desired look.
“I never thought that I’d be using a bed frame in my kitchen. If you haven’t before maybe you should try it because I think it’s fabulous, it adds so much character and warmth to our kitchen.”
She had indeed found many fans of the unusual addition.
“You are a genius!” exclaimed on impressed follower.
Another viewer was eager to get started on her own DIY project: “Totally doing this!”
“How do you keep it clean?” one curious follower asked.
“It has a ton of varnish on it and wipes easily – we also don’t cook a lot,” she explained.
