SAG Awards: ‘Succession’ would be 3rd drama series to win ensemble prize for final season
If “Succession” ends up winning the drama ensemble prize at the 2024 SAG Awards, as Gold Derby predicts, it would become only the third drama series in history to prevail for its final season. The first was “The Sopranos” at the 2008 ceremony, followed by “Breaking Bad” at the 2014 gala. The “Succession” cast first won this award two years ago on its first nomination, so if it triumphs again it would go undefeated in this category, unlike “The Sopranos” (which went two for seven) and “Breaking Bad” (which went one for three).
HBO’s family drama wrapped up its heralded final season in May and was honored at the Emmy Awards with a series-high 27 nominations. The Emmys were supposed to be handed out in September of this year, but they were pushed back to January 15, 2024 due to the writers’ and actors’ strikes. They are still scheduled to take place before the SAG Awards, which will be doled out on Netflix on February 24, 2024.
“Succession” has had an interesting ride at the Screen Actors Guild Awards. The voters infamously snubbed the show for its first and second seasons, despite other awards shows falling head over heels for it by Season 2. As Logan Roy might have said at the time, “I love you, but you are not serious people.” However, SAG-AFTRA did an about-face for the third season, honoring “Succession” with the most nominations (five) for a drama series that year and giving it the trophy for best ensemble.
SAG’s winning cast members from Season 3 were Nicholas Braun, Juliana Canfield, Brian Cox, Kieran Culkin, Dagmara Domińczyk, Peter Friedman, Jihae, Justine Lupe, Matthew Macfadyen, Dasha Nekrasova, Scott Nicholson, David Rasche, Alan Ruck, J. Smith-Cameron, Sarah Snook, Fisher Stevens, Jeremy Strong and Zoë Winters. Individual nominations went to Cox, Culkin and Strong in drama actor (they lost to Lee Jung-jae of “Squid Game”), and Snook in drama actress (she lost to Jung Ho-Yeon of “Squid Game”).
As of this writing, Gold Derby’s combined odds favor “Succession” to win the 2024 ensemble prize. Its drama counterparts look to be HBO’s “The Last of Us,” Netflix’s “The Crown” (also on its last season), Apple’s “The Morning Show” and Showtime’s “Yellowjackets,” with Paramount+’s “1923” in the spoiler position.
In the drama actor race, Culkin, Strong and Macfadyen are in the Top 5 while Cox is on the bubble in sixth place. The other potential nominees are Pedro Pascal (“The Last of Us”) and Billy Crudup (“The Morning Show”).
As for the drama actress contest, Snook leads a list that will also likely include Bella Ramsey (“The Last of Us”), Jennifer Aniston (“The Morning Show”), Elizabeth Debicki (“The Crown”) and Keri Russell (“The Diplomat”).
