Will ‘Frasier’ revival send Kelsey Grammer back to Golden Globes?
Kelsey Grammer is back again in his defining role as Frasier Crane, a character he has portrayed since 1984 on both “Cheers” and “Frasier,” becoming one of the longest-running roles in television history at almost 40 years. The new “Frasier” revival premiered October 12 on Paramount Plus and centers around the titular character returning to his earlier life in Boston (where the character originated in “Cheers”), hoping to reconnect with his distant son Frederick (Jack Cutmore-Scott). With the return of Grammer after 20 years and the success of the original series, could he score a nomination at the Golden Globes for the show’s first outing at awards eligibility?
Along with Grammer and Cutmore-Scott, the updated “Frasier” stars Toks Olagundoye as Harvard’s psychology head, Anders Keith as Frasier’s nephew, Jess Salgueiro as Freddy’s roommate and Nicholas Lyndhurst as Frasier’s longtime friend and colleague. Plus, Bebe Neuwirth as Frasier’s ex-wife Lilith is poised to make a guest appearance later in the season. The show is developed for Paramount Plus by Chris Harris and Joe Cristalli.
While most remember “Frasier’s” record-breaking awards success at the Emmys, lest we forget it received 24 Golden Globe nominations between 1994 and 2002, with Grammer solely receiving a third of the show’s overall tally at eight mentions. He would end up winning twice for the role in Best TV Comedy Actor in 1996 and 2001, a rarity for the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, who are known to spread the wealth. They have also recognized Grammer’s recent stint in the television drama category, giving him his third victory in 2012 for his menacing role in the Starz political drama “Boss.”
The HFPA has been more reputable in recognizing actors from revivals of classic series, particularly in the comedy category. The most recent acknowledgments came in 2019 when they nominated Debra Messing for “Will & Grace” and Candice Bergen for “Murphy Brown,” both of whom received multiple consecutive notices during the majority of their series’ runs – six for the former and eight for the latter – similar to Grammer. Over on the male side, Eric McCormack was cited the year before in 2018 for the other half of “Will & Grace” (after five tries during the original), while Jason Bateman received a nom for the “Arrested Development” revival in 2014 after winning in 2005, and Matt LeBlanc was recognized for his spinoff “Joey” in 2005 right after his noms for “Friends” for the previous two years.
As of this writing, Grammer sits within reach of his 10th Golden Globe nomination and his ninth for “Frasier,” currently in seventh place for Best TV Comedy Actor at 58/1 odds. Due to a new rule change, there will be six nominees in every category and Grammer is right now behind Emmy nominees and leading contenders Jeremy Allen White (“The Bear”) at 10/3 odds and Jason Sudeikis (“Ted Lasso”) at 4/1, followed by Bill Hader (“Barry”) at 11/2, “Only Murders in the Building’s” Martin Short and Steve Martin with 6/1 and 7/1 odds, and Jason Segel (“Shrinking”) at 17/2.
But Grammer should not be counted out and with the Globes’ history of nominating revived series and their love of “Frasier,” it wouldn’t be a surprise to hear him listed as a contender for the 81st edition ceremony come December 11.
