8:00 p.m. — “Previously on ‘The Masked Singer’!” In episode 4, four characters took “The Masked Singer” stage to sing their hearts out in hopes of advancing to the next round. In the end, Royal Hen was forced to unmask following her performance of “Philadelphia Freedom” by Elton John. The feathered aristocrat was revealed to be tennis legend and activist Billie Jean King. Who will unmask tonight?
8:05 p.m. — Adrian Bailon-Houghton (Season 2’s Flamingo) opens this spookfest with her rendition of “I Put a Spell on You” by Screamin’ Jay Hawkins. Next Nick introduces tonight’s first contestant, Tiki. In his clue package he reveals, “Making my debut last week was just beachy, and now, getting to perform again on ‘Harry Potter Night’ feels pretty fitting because I’ve really found the magic in my life these days. There comes a time in every rockin’ tropical cocktail’s life where they need to decide what comes next. Do you let yourself get watered down or do you change with the times? I decided to put the hard partying lifestyle on the back burner and my family on tap. I used to be up every night partying until 6 a.m., now that’s what time my alarm goes off to take my kid to school. It makes me emotional just thinking about it. I definitely don’t want tonight to be my last call, so when I get out on stage, you’re gonna see that this Tiki is still on the rocks!” Visual clues included a piano, beer on tap, a grandfather clock in the trash and a tissue box with a frowning emoji on it.
8:10 p.m. — Tiki is performing “Magic” by Pilot. He has a great voice and his tone almost sounds autotuned. Jenny says she’s more confused than ever as this cocktail struts his stuff on stage, working the audience like a pro. After his magical vocal performance the men in black bring out the Sorting Hat, which declares Tiki is from the House of Gryffindor. Tiki says, “You gotta be brave to be front and center of the types of stages I command.” This leads the panelists to guess Dave Grohl (Ken), Jon Bon Jovi (Nicole), Roger Daltrey (Robin) and Robert Plant (Robin).
8:15 p.m. — Next out on stage is Husky. In his clue package he reveals, “I showed everyone last week this dog can still hunt. But just like Harry Potter, growin’ up, I was also an underestimated wizard. As a young pup, I was picked on a lot. Other kids always giving me a hard time and calling me skinny. So I retreated, started working out on my magical arts, and evolved from a skinny boy to a husky man. So, all those old naysayers, they saw my rise to the top dog. But, confession, despite all the love and inspiring some love making, to this day I still don’t feel like I’ve made it. In my head I’m just that little puppy with a dream trying to make something out of himself. Now I’m here to prove that I believe in me, enough to do anything, like winning ‘The Masked Singer.'” Visual clues included a globe, a rose and three King of Hearts playing cards.
8:20 p.m. — Husky is performing “Super Freak” by Rick James. He definitely has musicality and looks comfortable on stage. I’m confused about whether Husky is a true musician or another celebrity with a hidden talent. He’s certainly got soul! The Sorting Hat reveals Husky belongs to the House of Hufflepuff. Husky says, “I actually had a feeling I’d be the Hufflepuff because of my connection to Mr. Puff himself, P. Diddy.” This leads the panelists to guess Tank (Nicole), Ginuwine (Nicole) and Brian McKnight (Jenny). Robin quickly shoots down Jenny’s guess.
8:25 p.m. — Third on stage tonight is Hawk. In his clue package he reveals, “I can’t believe I came out on top of that epic battle of the birds. Getting to let loose felt really magical, and these days I try to find magic wherever I can. Not too long ago someone close to me lost her battle with cancer. She was my support system and my best friend. After she passed nothing seemed to matter. I sunk into a deep well of loneliness and depression. I realized she wouldn’t want me to live my life this way so I finally opened up about my feelings and got help. I’ve learned that while the pain will never go away, it lessens. Now I hope to inspire others that no matter how dark things may get, there’s always a way to find some light again.” Visual clues included a stethoscope, the word “TEEN” with slash marks through it (like a teen slasher flick), a book that says “DON’T OPEN” in bright red letters and the quote “I will always love you, come see,” from Mama Hawk.
8:30 p.m. — Hawk is performing “Every Little Thing She Does is Magic” by The Police. He’s a little less polished as a vocalist than the previous two competitors. I have a feeling he’s an actor who sings rather than a pop/rock star. He’s still a fun performer! The Sorting Hat reveals Hawk belongs to the House of Ravenclaw. Hawk says, “It makes a lot of sense that I’m Ravenclaw because I was a good student, or, at least you saw me on TV pretending to be.” This leads the panelists to guess Ryan Phillippe (Robin), Andrew Garfield (Ken) and Billie Joe Armstrong (Nicole).
8:35 p.m. — The final performer of the night is an all-new wildcard. It’s Sea Queen! She reveals in her clue package, “When I got asked to appear as the Sea Queen on ‘Harry Potter Night’ as a wildcard I said, ‘Great! Sign me up because I’ve always been a bit of a wildcard in life.’ I got my first job giving museum tours at 14, but I got fired. And then, because I was a smart cookie my mom got me into a fancy boarding school, but I got kicked out. But all the wild twists and turns have made me the triple threat that I am today. Comedy, writing, singing, I’ve done it all. And these days, I’m preparing for a new tour. Oh, and dressing up in a giant costume getting ready to put you all under my spell. Should we do this thing?” Visual clues included a handbag, a black widow spider and a CD player.
8:40 p.m. — Sea Queen is performing “Love Potion No. 9” by The Searchers. She sings about three words before I decide this is Macy Gray. She simply has one of the most instantly recognizable voices in the music industry. I love this bluesy, husky rendition of the song. The Sorting Hat declares Sea Queen belongs to the House of Slytherin. Sea Queen says, “Slytherin makes sense for me. I’ve always been clever in my career. You’ll never know which genre you’ll catch me in next.” This leads the panelists to guess Erykah Badu (Jenny), Queen Latifah (Ken) and Jenifer Lewis (Nicole). I still think I’m right.
8:45 p.m. — The studio audience and panelists have voted. The top two singers advancing to the Group B finale are Husky and Sea Queen. That means Tiki and Hawk will fight it out in an epic smackdown.
8:50 p.m. — Tiki and Hawk both put their own twist on “Monster” by Lady Gaga. This sounds completely out of Tiki’s wheelhouse, but he’s got the versatility to pull anything off. Hawk’s version is a little more punk rock. Both performances were solid, but the panelists must pick one to move on to the Group B finale and the other will be forced to unmask.
8:55 p.m. — The panelists have voted and the winner of this smackdown is Tiki! That means Hawk will unmask in front of America tonight.
9:02 p.m. — Before Hawk unmasks the panelists submit their final guesses: Ryan Phillippe (Robin), Chad Michael Murray (Jenny), Cole Sprouse (Ken) and Billie Joe Armstrong (Nicole). Finally it comes time for Hawk to unmask and everyone is wrong. The Hawk is actor and “Teen Wolf” star Tyler Posey! That’s a wrap for tonight. Next week is the Group C premiere featuring classic one-hit wonders.
