I made a £12k discovery while doing up my house – it was so ugly before but now people say I’ve hit the jackpot
AN INFLUENCER has revealed how she discovered £12k worth of flooring underneath her rotting red carpet while renovating her first home.
After moving into her “fixer upper”, Anya Clements and her partner Calum Jones began making changes throughout their home while trying to stay on a budget.
That’s when the first time buyers hit the renovation jackpot.
After ripping up her “ugly red carpet”, the 22-year-old was shocked to find luxury oak parquet flooring covering the entire downstairs floor.
Oak parquet flooring can typically cost between £20- £80 per sq.
“I was over the moon,” she says. “We saved lots of time and money by not getting new flooring and it was the floor we were going to get there anyways.”
Anya was initially unsure of the floor’s true value, so decided to get a second opinion.
“I felt speechless,” she says. “I didn’t realise flooring could cost so much.
“The floor was beautiful and similar to what we were going to put there so we fell in love with it.
“We have started to sand it by hand and varnish it ourselves.”
Anya and Calum, 28, are doing the full renovation themselves in their Cardiff home.
The first-time buyers bought the property in August.
“Hand-sanding takes a lot of time and effort but we are aiming to do as much as the renovation ourselves to keep the cost down,” she explains.
“The £12k flooring hasn’t cost us a penny.”
Anya has been documenting her renovation journey on TikTok, reaping in mass comments at her lucky find.
Karen said: “Do you want to send some of that luck my way. What an amazing find.”
Another user commented: “Jackpot!!”
Koko said: “Omg Pinterest board heaven, you lucky thing!”
Others added that the floor will be “incredible” once restored.
One person joked that they were “jealous” after only finding concrete when pulling back the carpet of their fixer upper home.
“TikTok has been going crazy on the video I posted,” Anya says.
“Many people commented to say they found mould and asbestos and how lucky we were to find the floor in good condition.”
