Farke crisis of identity
Like at Norwich.
Lots of pressing, controlling the game in possession, lots of neat little passing triangles and attacking movement and attack attack attack.
Like a budget Klopp.
That hasn't happened.
He seemed to abandon that in his 2nd season at Norwich in the Premier League, set them up to counter more (it didn't work they conceded more and scored less than even the terrible 1st season).
But he also didn't do it at Borussia Mönchengladbach, the pressing apparently was basically non existing and the fast attacking triangles were abandoned for slow passing along the back (to the point fans would turn there back to the game and whistle and boo)
It's like he was so traumatised by how badly his style failed in his first Premier League season he abandoned it for a safer (in theory) more slow paced passive style.
His reasoning for playing Piroe at 10 was influenced by Rutter's ability to press, we don't press so it's a lie.
The slow build up needs plenty of movement from midfield and attack to progress the ball up the pitch with one of the attacking players dropping deep to create a spare man (we don't have a 10 to do this).
Setting up to counter like he did yesterday makes everything even harder for the players he has taken to playing out of position. Archie Gray bless his heart is a midfielder playing out of position (as Is quite fashionable now having 1 full back play midfield). You see it with teams like Arsenal or Liverpool or Man City or even Leicester.
What you don't see though is those teams conceding ground, dropping back, not pressing and making it easy for the tricky opposition winger to run at the teenage midfielder all game. So Archie was no longer a midfielder at right back playing like a midfielder, he was a midfielder being asked to defend like a normal right back getting his butt kicked.
This obsession with Piroe as a 10, the only way it can work even a bit is if Piroe is in that pocket receiving the ball on the half turn and progressing forward . But when you set up to not press, to concede possession then you are asking Piroe to do something he can't do, effectively make a midfield 3 and track a runner.
He isn't going to do that, so your midfield gets overrun and a spare man is always open for the opposition (likely in the 10 pocket and in at your defence).
This setup doesn't bare much similarly with his Norwich side that won the Championship.
It is at the moment entirely reliant on moments from the talented players like Rutter turning and dribbling past 3 players or Summerville scoring a worldie, things that have nothing to do with the manager.
This is much closer to Jesse March having Raphinha just doing things rather than Marsch and his tactics impacting the game than it is Bielsa and his tactics making the best of his players in the Championship.
But it does seem Farke has abandoned much of what helped his sides in the past.
Norwich moved the ball quickly, lots of intricate passing triangles and pressed hard if they lost the ball.
We move the ball slowly, side to side and eventually into Rutter or Summerville hoping they will turn and run and create and then drop off if the ball is lost.
You can pick fault with much of what Farke has done tactically (his in game management is awful)
But I don't understand the seeming abandonment or at the very least compromise on his principles.
*no not a Farke out post etc just a concern*
