Letitia James takes aim at Ivanka Trump's credit cards in effort to force trial testimony
New York Attorney General Letitia James is using former first daughter Ivanka Trump's credit card bills as evidence that she can be compelled to testify in her father and brothers' civil fraud trial, reported Newsweek on Thursday.
The case centers on allegations that Trump and his two adult sons systematically lied about the value of the Trump Organization's assets to get more favorable loan and tax arrangements. James is seeking $250 million in fines and a ban on the Trump's from operating in the state.
Ivanka was originally part of the lawsuit as well, but the case against her was dismissed because the timeline of her formal involvement with the Trump Organization put her alleged wrongdoing outside the statute of limitations.
Nevertheless, James is subpoenaing her testimony — and pushing back on her lawyers' efforts to say that she is exempt from giving evidence in the case.
POLL: Should Trump be allowed to run for office?
"[Ivanka] does not seem to be averse to her involvement in the family business when it comes to owning and collecting proceeds from the OPO sale, the Trump Organization purchasing insurance for her and her companies, managing her household staff and credit card bills, renting her apartment or even paying her legal fees in this action," wrote James to the court.
James also disputed claims from Ivanka's attorneys that the subpoena wasn't properly served, writing, "As an initial matter, Ms. Trump tries to draw a distinction between whether the subpoena had been served on her individually or as an officer of the entities addressed beneath her name in the subpoena. All roads here lead to Rome; regardless of how the subpoenas are parsed, sufficient service was effected to compel Ms. Trump's testimony, whether individually or as an officer or agent of the corporate entities."
Judge Arthur Engoron has already ruled for James on the merits of the case; the current trial is primarily about assessing the scope of the damages against the Trumps.
