68 killed and injured in passenger train collision in India
Indian media has reported that following the collision of two passenger trains in India, 14 people lost their lives, while 54 others remain injured.
On Monday, the Hindustan Times reported that two passenger trains derailed in Andhra Pradesh, India. As a result of this incident, 14 individuals died, and 54 others were injured.
A senior railway official in the state explained that the incident occurred when the Vizag Patnam passenger train stopped due to overhead electrical wire damage. Subsequently, the Palasa Express train, approaching from the opposite direction, collided with it, causing some of the coaches to derail. This collision resulted in at least 70 fatalities and injuries.
The Indian railway network, spanning 115,000 kilometres and being one of the largest rail networks globally, claims hundreds of lives each year due to equipment wear and tear and train accidents.
It’s worth noting that earlier in October, a similar incident occurred in eastern India, where a train derailment resulted in a minimum of four fatalities and 80 others sustaining injuries.
India’s railway system is considered one of the most crucial modes of transportation, with over 13 million people using it daily. However, outdated infrastructure and a lack of attention from authorities have been significant factors contributing to deadly incidents like this one.
