Chargers stand pat at the NFL trade deadline
The Chargers didn’t make a move Tuesday at the NFL’s trade deadline for the second consecutive year, standing pat on a roster that held a 3-4 record but was on the verge of getting two significant players back from injuries going into a matchup with the New York Jets on Monday night.
With wide receiver Jalen Guyton and defensive lineman Otito Ogbonnia nearing returns from serious knee injuries, the Chargers should get a boost when they are activated from the PUP list. Guyton and Ogbonnia would give the Chargers additional depth at two key positions when they’re fit to play.
“Progressing, but to be determined,” Chargers coach Brandon Staley said last week of Guyton, who could fill a void created when Mike Williams suffered a season-ending knee injury in Week 3, and Ogbonnia. “They were in all three practices this week and that part was encouraging.”
Additionally, the Chargers seemed content to have Will Clapp serve as a replacement for center Corey Linsley, who has been sidelined by a heart ailment but has been around his teammates in recent weeks. Clapp and the offensive line did not give up a sack in Sunday’s victory over the Chicago Bears.
“He is doing well,” Staley said of Linsley. “Really glad that he’s with us. Really glad that he’s with the team. Our players would tell you, our coaches will tell you, he means a lot to our team and our organization. Certainly, since I’ve been here, he has helped me tremendously. I just can’t say enough good things about him.”
