Martin Lewis warns 2million drivers to check code on licence NOW – or risk £1,000 fine
MARTIN Lewis warned two MILLION drivers to check a code on the licence today – or risk an eye-watering £1,000 fine.
Speaking on The Martin Lewis Podcast, the MSE founder urged listeners to take a quick look at their photo ID.
While most motorists will not need to renew their UK driving licence until they hit 70 – there is a vital thing they DO need to update more frequently.
It comes as a whopping two million Brits have failed to do so and risk being slapped with a potentially crippling £1,000 penalty.
Martin Lewis said: “Get your photo ID out, there are two million people driving on expired licenses.
“If not you risk a fine, this isn’t about your driving license going out of date.
“It’s about the actual photocard going out of date – this normally happens after 10 years.
“Check section 4b which should have a date on it.
“If you get caught driving on an expired licence, you could be hit by a small fine or a maximum fine of £1,000 quid.”
According to the Gov.uk website: “You must renew a photocard licence every 10 years – you’ll receive a reminder before your current licence ends.”
How to renew your licence
It is a simple process and can be completed online, by post or via the Post Office.
The renewal will cost £14 to apply online or £17 by post – unless you’re over 70 and receive it for free.
However it is significantly more expensive to do so at the post office where drivers will have to fork out £21.50.
You can apply online via Gov.uk as long as you have a valid UK passport.
If you are going down the posting route, then you’ll need to pick up a D1 pack from most Post Offices.
Alternatively you can order one from the DVLA website.
Drivers will be charged an extra £4.50 to apply through the Post Office to cover the cost of taking an updated photograph in branch plus postage.
