Sports Briefs: SD’s Foster, MA’s Shepard run to top 10 finishes at BCL Championship
San Domenico senior Joaquin Foster and Marin Academy sophomore Luella Shepard both finished in the top 10 in their respective races at the BCL West/Central cross country championship at Golden Gate Park on Friday.
Foster, a senior, finished eighth in 16 minutes, 33.07 seconds, less than a minute off the winning pace of 15:39.76 set by Lick Wilmerding’s Sean Green. The Panthers’ George Kunze (16:49.65) and Devin Price (16:53.03) placed 14th and 15th, respectively, with Oliver Swain (17:24.52) coming in 20th. Junior Max Lanzendorf (18:59.28) placed 45th as the San Domenico boys placed fourth overall.
Wildcats senior Matisse Buckley (16:43.46) finished 12th with a personal best as the Marin Academy boys placed seventh in the nine-team field. Also scoring for the Wildcats were Fineas DeGooyer (30th, 17:47.96), Josh Levitan (34th, 18:02.50), James ztatum (36th, 18:07.84), and Sebastian Lema (42nd, 18:36.34).
Shepard finished ninth with a personal best of 19:30.76, while sophomore teammate Sadie Goodenough ran a personal best of 20:12.52 to finish 22nd, while freshmen Paige Fredrickson (24:22.96) and Jocelyn Morrow (24:39.04) placed 45th and 46th respectively. Sophomore Genesis Moo Gramajo (29:10.54) finished 53rd as the Wildcats placed seventh overall.
Senior Quinn Joyce led the fifth-place San Domenico girls with a personal best of 19:46.30 to finish 12th. Sophomore teammate Veronika Elias (21:06.71) crossed the line in 26th place, while sophomore Katherine Rodgers (22:41.98) placed 34th and senior Maple Silverstien (23:35.50) finished 41st. The Panthers’ Sarah Haskell (22:15.54) placing 29th.
The top runners now can look ahead to the North Coast Section Championship, to be held Nov. 18, at Hayward High.
Women’s water polo
College of Marin defeated Las Positas, 20-11, in Saratoga on Friday in the first round of the North Division Conference Championships. The Mariners (15-8) advance to Saturday’s round, hosted by West Valley College.
Men’s water polo
Archie Williams High grad Dylan Woodhead netted a goal as Team USA advanced closer to a berth in the 2024 Olympic Games with Friday’s 22-7 win over Argentina in the semifinals of the Pan American Games in Santiago, Chile. The Americans will face Brazil in Saturday’s finals, with the winner securing a spot in the Olympics.
