WEST HILLS — It came down to the final offensive possession for the Chaminade football team Friday night.
Trailing 35-32 to Inglewood with less than two minutes left in a CIF Southern Section Division 3 playoff opener, Chaminade quarterback Seth Shigg kept his poise as he methodically drove his team down the field.
A short pass to Logan Carpenter for a moderate gain, a 15-yard pass to Devin Olmande, a 36-yard pass to Niles Davis.
Even a lucky bounce was in the cards for the Eagles as lineman David Abajian covered up a fumble to maintain possession on the final drive.
Shigg capped it off with a 20-yard touchdown run, leaping over a defender to seal Chaminade’s 39-35 win.
“Devin he ran a 15-yard out, made a crazy catch to go out of bounds, very smart by him to give us more time. We ended up running the same play a little further down the line and Niles did what he does best, made a couple people miss,” Shigg said. “That last play I was looking for my guy Niles again, the line rush ran me off but I just tried to stay inbounds so we could win. My team made it happen for me and I’m so grateful for that.”
The Sentinels built up a 28-10 advantage in the first half behind three rushing scores by junior linebacker Venilaite Wolfgramm III, who moonlighted as Inglewood’s goal line back.
But the Eagles looked like a completely different team in the second half, scoring 22 unanswered points.
Davis scored a 6-yard touchdown on fourth-and-3 on Chaminade’s first possession of the third quarter.
Two drives later, Jackson Tyler broke off a 50-yard touchdown run and the Eagles converted the two-point conversion to bring the score to 28-25.
Shigg gave Chaminade the lead with a 73-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter. Earlier in the game he scored on a 54-yard touchdown run. Shigg rushed for 202 yards and three touchdowns on 12 carries to go along with 86 passing yards.
The Eagles, who lost to the Sentinels in overtime in the semifinals of last year’s CIF-SS Division 2 playoffs, got to make up for it on Friday night.
“I felt that we made some mistakes in the first half and our whole mantra was we were obligated to avenge last year’s loss,” Chaminade head coach David Machuca said. “They played hard and hats off to the kids, they believed.”
