WESTLAKE – Oaks Christian football coach Charlie Collins had a feeling that his team was peaking at the right time when it won the Marmonte League championship. A week after that, the Lions played four quarters with complete effort.
The Lions scored in each quarter in the first round of the CIF Southern Section Division 2 playoffs, beating Chaparral 41-7 at home on Friday night.
“Last week was a playoff game for us and it pushed us a little bit,” Collins said. “The guys played connected, they played together and it’s just kind of an idea of who we are when we’re playing good football.”
Quarterback Nate Bernett completed 15 of 19 passes for 223 yards and three touchdowns. His longest scoring pass of the night went 43 yards straight to Chase Farrell, who caught 10 passes for 167 yards and three touchdowns in the game.
Farrell has become a main target for Bennett with the absence of Justice Williams, who did not dress for the game due to injury.
“A lot of the defenses, they’re going to rotate towards me,” Farrell said. “We’re gonna try to find situations for them where they’re not so much rotating to me and I can get a one-on-one matchup. Coming into the third (quarter), we knew exactly what to do.”
Oaks Christian (9-2) scored on its second drive of the game. A short Chaparral punt set the Lions up on the 39-line and Bennett started the series with a 17-yard pass to Farrell. Three plays later, Bennett and Farrell connected again, this time for a 17-yard touchdown.
Linebacker Christian Knoos, who led the team in tackles along with Evan Fanner, recovered a tumble when Chaparral (7-4) got the ball and McKenzie Parks punched it in from three yards out shortly after to give Oaks Christian a 14-0 advantage with 4:57 remaining in the first quarter.
In addition to creating an opportunity for the offense, the Lions’ defense held the Chaparral offense, led by quarterback Dash Beerly, to a season-low seven points. The Pumas scored 59 points in their last game against Roosevelt.
“We knew (Beierly) can run around a little bit but we also knew we could cover and we just figured it was a matter of time before we got to him,” Collins said. “We made a point that we didn’t want them to score over 14 points.
Chaparral recovered a fumble on their own punt late in the opening frame and Beierly completed a 15-yard touchdown pass to Jacob Alvarez to start the second quarter.
The Lions scored just before halftime for a 21-7 lead before the break. Bennett hit Stevie Amar with a 17-yard pass with 1:55 to go, giving Oaks Christian’s depleted offense a much-needed lead.
Justice Williams, a Washington commit, did not dress for the game due to injury, leaving the Lions without a valuable receiver. Running back Deshonne Redeaux also was out due to injury, leaving Parks to shoulder the load in the run game. Parks rushed for 83 yards on eight carries.
“Just really making sure I’m working at practice,” Parks said. “It’s the same mission with increased carries. It’s new to me, but I like it a lot.”
Farrell’s third touchdown reception came six seconds into the final quarter when he snatched a 12-yard pass from Devin Tate, who came into the game at quarterback late in the third quarter. Tate (5-for-8, 73 yards) scored on a 1-yard keeper with 7:46 remaining in the game.
Oaks Christian honored school co-founder David Price, who died on Tuesday, with a moment of silence prior to the game. Price founded the school alongside Dallas Price-Van Breda in 2000 and was supportive of the football program.
“When I came on as the head coach, I remember him telling me, just take care of my kids,” Collins said. “I took that personally. When they allowed me to take over this program, I knew what it meant to them so it meant that to me as well. I hope I’m making him proud.”
Collins will continue that promise next week when Oaks Christian heads to Mission Viejo (8-3), which beat Palos Verdes 59-35, for a second-round matchup on Friday, Nov. 10.
