Destructive earthquake in Nepal claims 128 lives
Nepalese authorities have confirmed that in the aftermath of a destructive earthquake in western Nepal, 128 individuals tragically lost their lives, while dozens more sustained injuries.
On Saturday, the Washington Post, citing Nepalese authorities, reported that the earthquake occurred in the western region of Jajarkot, Nepal, resulting in the loss of 128 lives.
The United States Geological Survey (USGS) has reported the magnitude of this earthquake in Nepal as 5.6 on the Richter scale.
Meanwhile, according to a report by The Washington Post, authorities in the country have stated that helicopters and ground forces rushed to aid the affected people following a severe earthquake that shook northwestern regions of Nepal just before midnight on Friday.
Officials added that the death toll is expected to rise and noted that communication with many areas has been severed.
Kuber Kadayat, a spokesperson for the Nepalese police, has stated that as daylight arrives, rescue helicopters are flying to the region to assist while security forces on the ground are working to extract the injured and deceased from the rubble.
Officials in the country have announced that relief forces are currently clearing roads and mountainous routes that had become blocked due to landslides triggered by the earthquake.
Meanwhile, the epicentre of this earthquake was in Jajarkot, where at least 92 people were killed and 55 were injured in this city alone.
According to The Washington Post, this earthquake has claimed the lives of at least 36 people in neighbouring areas, where numerous houses have collapsed, and at least 85 injured individuals have been transported to local hospitals.
Nepal is one of the earthquake-prone regions in the world and had previously suffered extensive damage to its capital in a significant earthquake in 1934.
