The exact winter hat to suit your face shape – and ovals get all the choice
AS the cold weather sets in, there’s nothing like a hat to keep you feeling warm and cosy.
But what’s the best style for your face shape – to ensure you look stylish too?
From cute bobble hats to trendy trilbies, celebrity stylist and royal expert Miranda Holder tells Tanith Carey which are the most flattering styles for your face.
ROUND FACE
JUST LIKE: Chrissy Teigen, Holly Willoughby, Myleene Klass, Jennifer Hudson, Kylie Jenner, Kirsten Dunst, Selena Gomez.
WHAT TYPE OF FACE IS THIS? The length and width of your face are about the same and you have a softer, rounded jawline. You may also have more circular features and brows.
WHICH WINTER HATS? Angled hats, like a fedora or trilby style, with tall crowns and wider brims.
MIRANDA SAYS: “If you have a round face, it’s all about balancing out that lovely roundness with angles, height and structure. A taller crown will help lengthen your features, as well as highlight your cheek-bones.”
HIGH STREET: Navy fedora, £39.95, Joules.
OBLONG FACE
JUST LIKE: Bella Hadid, Sarah Jessica Parker, Katy Perry, Liv Tyler, Alexa Chung, Gwen Stefani, Cate Blanchett, Gwyneth Paltrow, Cardi B.
WHAT TYPE OF FACE IS THIS? Oblong faces are long and narrow and are usually twice as long as they are wide.
WHICH WINTER HATS? Baker boy, pork pie, low-crowned fedora or low, floppy hat.
MIRANDA SAYS: “Look for hats that shorten your face by going for styles with some width.
“Avoid anything too tall to avoid lengthening an already long profile. Wide, floppy brims can add width, balancing everything out.”
HIGH STREET: Black baker boy hat, £8, Pea-cocks.
HEART-SHAPED FACE
JUST LIKE: Taylor Swift, Michelle Keegan, Elizabeth Debicki, Reese Witherspoon, Florence Pugh, Victoria Beckham, Anya Taylor-Joy.
WHAT TYPE OF FACE IS THIS? Heart-shaped faces tend to have a broader forehead that tapers down to a pointed, narrower chin.
WHICH WINTER HATS? Berets and hats with narrower rims.
MIRANDA SAYS: “Hats with shorter brims are generally better with this face shape to avoid exaggerating a wider forehead.
“If you have a heart-shaped face, the hat you choose should not overpower your features, but complement them.
“A hat worn at an angle – so pulled down at one side – can also work wonders.”
HIGH STREET: Red wool rich beret, £18.00, John Lewis.
SQUARE FACE
JUST LIKE: Angelina Jolie, Ellie Bamber, Zendaya, Olivia Wilde, Keira Knightley, Kelly Osbourne.
WHAT TYPE OF FACE IS THIS? Wider hairline, and cheekbones the same width as your jaw. The face has fewer curves and may have more symmetrical features.
WHICH WINTER HATS? Bobble hats or cloche hats are great, as are hats with a looser structure and a curved shape.
MIRANDA SAYS: “Apply the opposite principles to a square face shape as you would to a round-shaped face.
“So in this case you want to soften an already angular face with curved lines.
“Try a cloche hat or an exaggerated bobble hat. Avoid structured, square-shaped hats.”
HIGH STREET: Adjustable cloche hat, £24.90, Uniqlo.
OVAL FACE
JUST LIKE: Meghan Markle, Rita Ora, Beyonce, Kim Kardashian, Gigi Hadid, Naomi Campbell, Katie Price.
WHAT TYPE OF FACE IS THIS? Your face is slightly longer than it is wide, and you have a rounder chin and jawline.
WHICH WINTER HATS? Beanies and baseball caps.
MIRANDA SAYS: “An oval face shape is already considered to be balanced. So in theory you can get away with any style and whatever makes you look and feel great.
“Choose a hat that will be the piece de resistance to your look, acting as an exclamation mark to your outfit.”
HIGH STREET: Bright pink beanie, £9.99, New Look, above.
