Who will get the most Grammy nominations? These 5 artists are most likely
Each year we Grammy pundits theorize about who will get the most nominations, especially since they often win the most Grammys too. So who’s going to be this year’s lucky artist? Here are five possibilities.
21 Savage
The rapper might not be your first thought when it comes to maxing out on nominations, but his features might take him there. His biggest bet is “Creepin’” alongside Metro Boomin and The Weeknd. The track is submitted in three categories (Record of the Year, Best R&B Song, Best R&B Performance) and could easily get in all three. Another good bet for Savage in the R&B field is Usher’s “Good Good,” which also features Summer Walker. “Good Good” and “Creepin’” can’t both be nominated in Best R&B Performance since that category is limited to one nomination per artist, but it’s likely that both show up in Best R&B Song where multiple noms are allowed.
He might also be looking at nominations in the rap field. He’s got two good bets. His first are his collaboration records with Drake, part of their joint album “Her Loss.” If they get lucky, they could get Best Rap Performance and Best Rap Song for “Rich Flex,” Best Melodic Rap Performance for “Spin Bout U,” and Best Rap Album. Savage’s second decent bet is Diddy’s “Another One of Me,” which also features The Weeknd and French Montana, in Best Rap Song. And of course, we could also see “Her Loss” cross over to the general field with an Album of the Year nom. So Savage could be looking at eight to 10 nominations total.
Jon Batiste
Considering Batiste’s last trip to the Grammys brought him 11 nominations and five wins, it’s safe to assume that his 2023 album “World Music Radio” will do just as well. It’s probably in for all general field categories, and you can expect his Song of the Year submission, “Butterfly,” in both of its American roots races. We could also see Batiste in Best Jazz Performance, another category he got into last time. Batiste might also score in the R&B field again for “Running Away” with Leigh-Anne. “Worship” could additionally land in Best Dance/Electronic Recording. He has more submissions that are longshots but still possible, so he could cross 10 nominations again. For now, though, I think eight sounds about right.
Ice Spice
Let’s start with the givens: Ice Spice will get into Best New Artist. Her Nicki Minaj-assisted “Barbie World” will likely be nominated in both Best Melodic Rap Performance and Best Rap Song. And you can bet on her for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance, either for “Karma” (with Taylor Swift) or “Boy’s a Liar, Pt. 2” (with PinkPantheress). That’s already four nominations. You might want to add an additional Best Rap Performance nom for “In Ha Mood.” There’s also a chance for both “Barbie World” and “Boy’s A Liar” to get at least one general field nom each (Record and/or Song of the Year). And finally, she might add in Best Song Written for Visual Media for “Barbie World.” So Ice could be looking at eight nominations, a great feat for the Bronx rapper.
SZA
One of the biggest selling points of SZA’s album “SOS” is how diverse it is sonically, so it’s no surprise that the record is competing in many genres. SZA is obviously getting all three nominations in the general field (Album, Record and Song of the Year), and she’s likely to max out with four noms in the R&B field as well. Her next best shot might be Best Pop Duo/Group Performance for her Phoebe Bridgers collab “Ghost in the Machine,” which isn’t the highest-profile contender there but can get in due to the category being weak and SZA being beloved this year. And there’s an outside chance for a Best Rock Song nomination for “F2F” or a Best Pop Solo Performance bid for “Nobody Gets Me.” But perhaps more likely is “Low,” which is competing in Best Melodic Rap Performance. At worst, SZA is probably getting seven noms, but at best, she could get around 11.
Taylor Swift
Swift doesn’t actually have that many submissions (seven to be exact). The most nominated artist every year typically scores around eight to 10, but if everyone else flops, she could come out on top. The good news for her is that she’s a lock in five categories: three in the general field, plus Best Pop Solo Performance (“Anti-Hero”) and Best Pop Vocal Album (“Midnights”). There’s a chance that “Karma” with Ice Spice gets into Best Pop Duo/Group Performance (it has to get more votes than “Boy’s a Liar” though, since only one nomination per artist is allowed and Ice Spice is on both songs). And it wouldn’t be far-fetched to see Swift in Best Music Video, especially after “Anti-Hero” swept the VMAs. So if she comes out on top, it shouldn’t shock you.
