Sports Briefs: MA, Redwood advance to NCS tennis semis
Bay Counties League West champion Marin Academy defeated rival Branson, 6-1, to advance to Saturday’s North Coast Section Division II semifinals.
The fifth-seeded Wildcats will face top-seeded Bishop O’Dowd on Saturday morning at Merritt College, with the championship match to be held later the same day.
• MCAL champion Redwood High is moving on to championship weekend in the NCS D-I girls tennis bracket. The third-seeded Giants rolled past No. 6 Mission San Jose, 5-2, in Thursday’s quarterfinals.
Gwenn Ricordel gave the Giants a 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 4 singles. Redwood swept doubles play after the No. 1 Giants duo of Elle Povio and Annesley Krawitt rallied for a 4-6, 6-3, 10-2 win. Teammate Julia Laury won 6-2, 6-0 at No. 3 singles.
The Giants will face No. 2 seed Miramonte in Saturday’s semifinals at James Logan High in Union City. The championship match will be held later the same day. Miramonte, which defeated Tam in the first round, advanced with a 6-1 victory over No. 7 American.
Men’s soccer
Dominican University’s halftime lead did not hold up in a 2-2 tie with Fresno Pacific on Thursday. The Penguins led 1-0 at the break, but the Sunbirds came rushing back late. Diego Grande and Jesus Duran scored for Dominican (8-5-4, 6-2-2).
Women’s soccer
Dominican University goalkeeper Natalie Haro stopped Fresno Pacific in a 0-0 tie Thursday. Gabrielle Wampler had two shots on goal for the Penguins (5-10-3, 1-6-3).
