My ageless Korean mom taught me so much about skincare, a ‘sandwich method’ makes products work harder
A SKINCARE obsessive has shared the behind-the-scenes of her routine – and her mother is the source of most of her secrets.
The influencer said that there’s one crucial skincare product that helps prevent aging.
She also shared an application method called the “sandwich method” to help you apply it correctly.
Doctor, skincare influencer, and mom Dr. Zion (@dr.zionko) has 730,000 followers on TikTok.
She shares videos about improving skin health and skincare routines.
Her Korean mom often features in her advice.
In a clip entitled: “Things I learned growing up with a Korean mom,” Dr. Zion revealed how her mother keeps her skin healthy and prevents aging.
The mother-daughter duo appeared sitting beside each other, spoke directly to the camera, and discussed the importance of retinol.
The doctor said: “Retinols help improve the appearance of fine lines, creases, and wrinkles, and improve skin elasticity.”
However, the secret to this product is all in the application, according to her mom.
The influencer said that her mother “waits at least ten minutes after cleansing to apply retinol.
“This is because damp skin increases absorption which can increase irritation.”
Retinol can cause sensitivity and dryness for those not used to the product.
Luckily, Dr. Zion’s mom has tips on how to prevent this.
The skincare guru said: “She uses products that combine maximum concentration with minimal stimulation.
“Koreans prioritize skin hydration and protecting the skin barrier over anything else.”
Next, the pair discussed the importance of layering skincare and said: “It’s important to layer on your retinol correctly.
“Cream formulations should go on before your moisturizer, or you can use the sandwich method. Oil products should go on last.”
The “sandwich method” refers to a skincare technique designed to reduce the irritation from retinol and make products work harder.
Rather than applying retinol directly to dry, cleansed skin, you first apply a layer of moisturizer.
Once that’s dry, you apply the retinol, followed by more moisturizer.
Dr. Zion’s mother’s final piece of advice is to remember the rest of your body when you’re using anti-aging skincare.
Her mom said: “You should always bring retinol below the face – don’t forget your neck, your decolletage, and even your hands.”
Video viewers loved the pair’s advice-filled video.
One commenter wrote: “Cute! Thanks to you and your mom! Great tips!”
