Report: Potential blow for Spurs as details emerge about striker’s contract 

In what comes as a blow to Spurs in their rumoured pursuit of Evan Ferguson, The Athletic have now revealed that the striker’s contract at Brighton does not contain a release clause.

Ferguson put to paper on a new contract at the Amex Stadium earlier this month, thus committing his future with the Seagulls until 2029 (Sky Sports).

Despite this development, speculation linking the 19-year-old with a move to Spurs has not dissipated, with talkSPORT reporting a little over a week ago that the Lilywhites view the youngster as the ideal option to fill Harry Kane’s shoes.

A couple of days ago, TEAMtalk reported that Spurs have been joined in the race for Ferguson’s signature by the likes of Arsenal and Chelsea.

The outlet added that Brighton are expected to demand a fee in excess of £100m for the teenager, potentially even more than the British-record £115m fee they received for Moises Caicedo.

No release clause in Evan Ferguson’s contract

It has now been confirmed by The Athletic that the five-year deal that Ferguson signed does not have any release clause.

That means that interested clubs would have to pay whatever Brighton demand for the Republic of Ireland international, and Roberto De Zerbi’s men have a history of driving a hard bargain.

The only faint hope that Tottenham had of winning the race for Ferguson was if his new contract contained a release clause of around £80m which would become active at a certain date. This news pretty much ends any chance we had of signing the 19-year-old.
