Experts slugfest: ‘The Color Purple’ enters the Oscar race — and could lock up one category
“The Color Purple” is (almost) here. Gold Derby editors and Experts Christopher Rosen and Joyce Eng are here to discuss the upcoming movie musical, Thanksgiving releases and more.
One of the last big contenders to screen, “The Color Purple” was finally unveiled last week, and we may have a new Best Supporting Actress frontrunner. Danielle Brooks steals the show as Sofia, reprising the role from her Tony-nominated turn on Broadway, that we (along with many others) both have now put her in first place. Brooks has also surged to second place in the odds, behind Da’Vine Joy Randolph (“The Holdovers”), and it might just be a matter of time before she takes over the top spot. Double supporting actress noms for “The Color Purple” for Brooks and Taraji P. Henson, who’s in fourth place, have been widely predicted, but will both get in?

Meanwhile, Fantasia Barrino delivers as Celie in her feature film debut, also reprising the role from Broadway. But is it enough to crack the competitive Best Actress field? She’s currently in sixth place in the odds. Over in supporting actor, Colman Domingo is angling for a bid to possibly go along with a Best Actor one for “Rustin.” But which film is more likely to produce a nomination for him?
Elsewhere, we discuss “Maestro’s” turbo-charged campaign as it hits theaters, “The Holdovers'” box office success and Oscar contenders as Thanksgiving side dishes.
