Cole Kmet Shares His Perspective on What Surprised Him About the Lions Approach to Justin Fields
Justin Fields is a dual-threat quarterback, and his running ability is a dangerous weapon in his game. Unfortunately, running quarterbacks like him are sometimes treated differently than quarterbacks who primarily stay in the pocket.
While this isn’t fair, referees often face tough/quick decisions when a defender is trying to tackle a mobile quarterback. In Justin Fields case, there have been many instances throughout his career where he has been subjected to late hits after giving himself up, unnecessary shots to the head, and late hits out of bounds that go uncalled.
In a recent interview with CHGO, Cole Kmet shared his perspective on Fields not receiving these types of calls in the game against the Detroit Lions last Sunday.
“There are some plays that were pretty egregious.. he is clearly down sliding or already on the ground and you got guys going for his head.. you don’t want to see that kind of stuff.”
Cole Kmet is absolutely right
Cole Kmet has highlighted a recurring issue. Throughout this season, there have been several instances where Fields has been hit late or hasn’t received a roughing the passer call.
The NFL simply needs to to do a better job protecting Justin Fields. They also need to maintain consistency across the league when it comes to protecting quarterbacks.
Kmet deserves credit for shedding light on this matter and standing up for his quarterback.
