Car carrying explosives blows up while trying to cross into U.S. from Canada: reports
A vehicle exploded on The Rainbow Bridge connecting the U.S. and Canada at Niagara Falls on Wednesday. All bridges in the area have been closed and all nearby government buildings evacuated according to reports.
Niagara Falls Mayor's Office said the vehicle was crossing into the U.S. from Canada. Fox News reported that explosives were inside the car and its two occupants were killed in the blast.
The vehicle was reportedly driving towards the border officer building when it exploded, according to Fox.
A 27-year-old male who was taken to the hospital with minor injuries, according to reports.
"The FBI Buffalo Field Office is investigating a vehicle explosion at the Rainbow Bridge, a border crossing between the US and Canada in Niagara Falls," the FBI said in a statement.
"The FBI is coordinating with our local, state, and federal law enforcement partners in this investigation. As this situation is very fluid, that's all we can say at this time."
“We don’t really know too much – just that there was a vehicle trying to come into the U.S .and they shut down both sides of the bridge,” public information officer for the city of Niagara Falls Aaron Ferguson told CNN.
Update: Fox News has reported that "high level police sources" have confirmed that the explosion was an attempted terrorist attack.
There are four border crossings in the Niagara Falls area.
